OPEN DAY: Free Seminars

ColouredBevel.jpg

A consistently popular feature of our Open Days are the two free seminars.  Places are limited on each of these sessions and you do need to reserve your seats in advance.  These tend to go very quickly so book now to avoid disappointment.

To reserve you place:

Quality Framing, Clear Presentation: 10.30 am – 11.30 pm

This is a single project, illustrating how to create a frame, which presents a simple piece of artwork appearing to float above the mountboard background, housed in what appears to be a “presentation box”.

The real intention however is to use this as an excuse to explore a range of kit, products and techniques.  There is nothing at all fancy, just simple things done well (we hope), so the project should offer something for everyone.  The session shows:

  • How to use the Nobex saw and frame measure system: if you’ve just bought one but never seen how to use it ….
  • Using a mitre trimmer to give even crisper joints
  • Using a studio joiner
  • Cutting glass
  • Using Econospace spacers to give depth from glass without a mount
  • Attaching artwork to a foam block so it appears to hover above the mount.

Close to the Edge: 12.30 pm – 1.30 pm

An attempted pun designed to link some useful ideas for demonstrations. The idea is simply to focus on the visible edges of items in a frame:

  • Adding a slip / fillet to the inside edge of the frame
  • Colour bevel edge on a mount,
  • Deep bevel mounts,
  • Mount slips
  • A very easy way to float-mount artwork so you can see the edge of the print / art paper.

Just Giving: Supporting a School in Kenya

JustGiving.jpg

Last month we made an appeal for people to donate some children’s shoes to a family we were visiting in Kenya. Unbelievably 200 pairs were dropped off at my shop Sunflower Framing of which we took out a suitcase full, along with 500-600 pencils and a number of small toys.

A few people who didn’t have shoes, offered to donate money but it was too close to our trip to arrange anything. Now having found a school to help we have set up a Just Giving page to raise £2000 to renovate 3 classrooms, this will be the first of many projects, but we want to start small and not over promise. If you still want to help please visit: Just Giving and read our story.

November Open Day

A big week for DIYframing next week with our next Business Development Week about to start: so we thought we’d better send an alert to our next Open Day and framing seminars.

Later newsletters will be posted towards the end of November / early December highlighting latest information, offers and advice (the usual style) with a Christmas special to follow, mainly alerting you to holiday closures / openings.

As always on our Open Days there will be two feature seminars: each one free to attend but do book in with us as places are limited.

Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you a project, which has developed into something quite special.  Starting with a simple idea for taking a few items, dropped off at Sunflower Gallery, over to some families I’d got to know in Kenya, this has now evolved into an exciting opportunity to support a community school.
