Towards the end of October we will be working in Maidstone. In November we will be near Gloucester and then up to York later in the month. The final flurry is in Dorchester in December. Picture Framing Competition

Winner: All Washed UpIt may be a little late in the day, but just in case you haven’t visited the DIYframing site recently, you can find out how the Picture Framing Competition turned out. There is absolutely no doubt that all, who entered the Summer Holidays Picture Framing Competition, produced pieces of an exceptional standard. The finalists' work, exhibited at the Summer Open Day in Beaconsfield, drew admiring scrutiny and prompted really positive comments from all of our visitors. The exhibition voting also reflected how tight things were: all of the finalists received votes for either 1st, 2nd or third place. In fact it really did go right to the wire, with the winner, Ian Oliver taking the lead on the last couple of ballot papers. For winner’s commentary and pictures click: Everyone’s A Winner.

Art Materials Live

Art Materials Live Show, NEC BirminghamApart from Focus on Imaging, the Art Materials Live show at the Birmingham NEC, is the largest exhibition that we visit. It’s amazing how many people don’t make the connection between the fact that DIYframing provides a complete supply package for picture framing, as well as offering training via UK School of Framing. To find out about all aspects of how we can help you, why not pop in and see us on Stand AM18? There will be a wide range of kit being demonstrated, plenty of materials and equipment for purchase at great prices.  Key DIYframing staff will be there to help you with framing ideas and guide you through our training programme.

If you are interested in any art form, Art Materials Live promises to be a great day out. The show runs from 5th – 8th November 2009. For full details and links to the show website, click: Art Materials Live.

Winter Open Day

OpenDay.jpg

For a change we thought we’d give you plenty of notice about our next Open Day. It will take place at the Beaconsfield HQ on 12th December 2009, running from 10.00 am – 2.30 pm. As always there will be special offers, clearance items, pack ends of job gallery mouldings at knock down prices and a seminar about a featured area of framing. The theme for this session will be taking a simple piece of framing (before) and looking at several ways of improving it (after). The artwork will be a piece of needlecraft, so, as well as looking at more contemporary, bespoke designs for this style of artwork, we also examine some of the practical ways of correcting poor treatment of the piece in its original framing. For a preview of the type of project being shown, have a look at our library piece: The Ugly Duckling. for more detail click Open Day.

Project Library: Star Framing

Medal150.jpg

For those of you unable to make the Beaconsfield Open Day, we thought that you might like to see part of what we got up to in the seminar. The focus was on working with 3D pieces, looking at how you can create depth within a frame. We also identified some types of “piece / artwork” needing to be framed in box or deep rebate frames. Memorabilia often falls into this category and so we decided to demonstrate some of the key principles of 3D framing, as illustrated by a project to frame a medal. That project is now featured in our library as: Star Framing.

October

We might be heading into Autumn and shorter days but there is plenty to look forward to.  This newsletter gives advance warning of the next batch of training sessions as well as the Winter Open Day.  You can come and see us at the Art Materials Live Exhibition (NEC, Birmingham) to pick up some early ideas for presents: kit, materials, training days or even a project you want to turn into a Christmas gift.  Then, for those of you who can't make our Open Days in Beaconsfield, project 5 in our "members" library features the piece demonstrated in the Summer.  We also bring you up to date with competition results and background to the winners' projects.
